WHO chief calls for end to hospital attacks in Gaza after deadly Israeli strike
The recent attacks on hospitals in Gaza have sparked outrage from the head of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for an immediate end to these attacks, emphasizing the critical importance of hospitals in providing essential healthcare services to the people of Gaza.
The Israeli military conducted a strike on Gaza City’s Al Wafa hospital, resulting in the death of seven individuals, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence. Additionally, more than 240 Palestinians, including medical staff from Kamal Adwan hospital, were detained by Israeli forces. The director of Kamal Adwan hospital, Hussam Abu Safiya, was among those arrested on suspicion of being a Hamas operative.
The Israeli military claimed that the hospitals were being used as command centres for Hamas military operations. However, Tedros has called for the immediate release of Abu Safiya and condemned the attacks on Al-Ahli hospital as well. He highlighted the importance of ensuring access to healthcare for all individuals in Gaza, regardless of the political situation.
In response to the escalating crisis, the WHO and its partners have delivered medical supplies, food, and water to Gaza’s Indonesian hospital. They have also facilitated the transfer of critical patients to Al Shifa hospital, despite facing challenges such as patient detainment during the process.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has taken a devastating toll on the civilian population, with thousands of Palestinians killed and wounded during Israel’s military offensive. The war was triggered by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, resulting in a significant loss of life and the taking of hostages.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of hospitals and healthcare facilities. The international community must come together to ensure that the people of Gaza have access to the medical care they desperately need during this challenging time.
