Blue Jays starting pitcher Berrios given opening day nod for 2nd straight season

The Toronto Blue Jays have made the decision to start right-hander Jose Berrios in their 2025 season opener. This announcement comes after Berrios was pulled from the 2024 opener after allowing four earned runs in just 1/3 of an inning against the Texas Rangers.
Last year, Berrios had a rough start to the season when he faced off against the Rangers. However, this year, the Blue Jays have shown confidence in him by giving him the opening day nod once again. Berrios will take the mound on March 27th against the Baltimore Orioles at home.
In the 2024 season opener, Berrios bounced back from his shaky start and earned a win against the Tampa Bay Rays. He pitched six solid innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out six. This performance likely played a role in the Blue Jays’ decision to give him another opportunity to start the season.
Despite his rocky start last year, Berrios had a strong season overall in 2024. He finished with a 16-11 record and a 3.60 earned-run average over 32 starts. This spring, he has continued to impress with a 1-0 record and a 2.35 ERA over four outings.
The Blue Jays have a history of success in season openers, having won their last five. With Berrios leading the way this year, fans will be eager to see if he can set the tone for another successful season for the team.
