Brandon teen recovering at home after sword attack inside high school

Chinoso Onuke, a 15-year-old student at Brandon’s Neelin High School, recently faced a terrifying ordeal when a fellow student attacked him with a sword. The attacker, dressed in all black with a mask, left Chinoso with severe injuries, including nearly severed fingers and wounds to his abdomen, chest, thigh, and hands.
Recalling the harrowing experience, Chinoso described how he initially thought the attacker’s outfit was a costume until the sword was drawn and he was struck in the stomach. In a desperate struggle for survival, Chinoso managed to defend himself and escape to the school office, where he sought help before being rushed to Winnipeg for emergency surgery.
His mother, Helen Onuke, expressed her shock and fear as she watched her son undergo surgery, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice in the wake of the racially-motivated attack. The family is calling for action from school officials, the city, and the province to ensure the safety of all students.
Despite the trauma he endured, Chinoso remains resilient and determined to recover. He is currently resting at home, using voice-controlled technology to stay connected and pass the time while his hands heal. Looking ahead, Chinoso hopes to return to his favorite activities, including basketball, football, and volunteering at a local soup kitchen.
As the community rallies around Chinoso and his family, there is a shared sense of shock and disbelief at the violence that unfolded within the school walls. Messages of support and solidarity have been written on the sidewalk outside Neelin High School, serving as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the community in the face of adversity.
Moving forward, Chinoso and his family are focused on healing and recovery, both physically and emotionally. While the road to recovery may be long and challenging, they remain hopeful and determined to overcome this traumatic experience together. The support of the community, along with calls for justice and safety measures, will be crucial in ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
